The Statue of Takayama Ukon in Kanazawa Catholic Church

About Takayama Ukon
We are Introducing the footsteps of Takayama Ukon, a Christian feudal lord. He was a great Christian Samurai who served Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Due to Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s edict to expel the missionaries(Bateren-tsuihou-rei), he gave his status as a feudal lord to Toyotomi Hideyoshi and came to Kanazawa at the invitation of the First Lord of Maeda family, Maeda Toshiie.
Takayama Ukon’s influence lives on in Kanazawa culture, Kanazawa Castle, the tea ceremony, and more.
He stayed in Kanazawa for 26 years and left a significant mark on the city’s culture.
However, although there are traces of his work, it is rare to see actual primary sources, and while people know his name today, very little is known about how his work influenced present-day Kanazawa.
So we’re trying to portray his life as accurately as possible.
